Our friend Jess just moved to Ottawa (yay!) and has mentioned how she wants some kickass magnets for her fridge, since all she's ever had were the flimsy little free ones you get to advertise various services. Booo-ring. I've finished my master's research paper AND it's been approved (!!!) so I had some spare time on my hands and thought, HEY perfect excuse to make marble magnets!
First I checked the dollar store. They only had coloured stones. Then I checked Home Hardware, no luck. Then I checked the bead store and they had no idea what I was talking about. So I sucked it up and biked the half hour under the blazing sun to get to Michael's where they STILL didn't have just the clear marbles, but they did have a mixed bag. Phew. I invested in marbles, magnets, silicone glue, and a few beads that were on sale before jumping back on the bike to get home.
And then the crafting began! Results are displayed below.
These were some experiments with beads I had in my craft drawer. I thought they might look neat, but I'm not really a fan after all. |
These were a string of beads on sale. Some had what looked like coffee stains on one side. |
These pendants were on sale too! I took the pliers to the loops at the top and stuck magnets on the back. |
The actual marble ones kinda grouped into sets. This one is animals. I think the bearmonster on the left is my favourite. |
People and places. The dude in the middle is my other favourite. He's actually a cave painting in India. |
And finally, nature/abstract colourful stuff. |
We'll probably keep some of them and give some to Jess. I dunno if they're quite 'kickass' but I think they'll make a nice apartment warming offering.
Oh, and a shot of the fridge pen tin, nestled in among shopping lists, other magnets, and Guinness.
Okay, back to knitting/applying for jobs!
You are done! Good job! Is your paper online somewhere?
ReplyDeleteI see on your fridge that you need some duct tape. That is sensible. But what is an "ironicboard"?
Hm. There is no convenient way to reply, so I will reply directly here, I guess.
ReplyDeleteMy paper isn't actually even published. It's a 'research paper' that had to get accepted by two people (my advisor and Very Important lady) and then I just give a hard copy to the department. Doesn't even need to be bound. It kinda feels anticlimactic. But my advisor wants to write up the results or adapt it or something to get it published in a real publication, so we'll see. I don't care, I am done academia.
Also, an ironicboard is Brad being funny (no one laughed) when he wrote 'ironing board'. We only have a wee tiny one that has crappy legs that sometimes pinch fingers and clothes.
I'd like to put in an order for some magnets, please. Hee hee! They are AWESOME Carly. :-)
